In 2019, Department for Education (DfE) launched a review of all post-16 qualifications at level 3 and below. The review highlighted how the sheer volume of qualifications, particularly at level 3, is presenting a complex skills market for providers, students and employers alike.
A case for change sets out a vision for the achievement of a simplified and streamlined approach to the skills market across qualifications funded by DfE. It is a vision which will ensure;
- providers have a clear and simple set of options to support students to make the right qualification choices for their future careers
- students leave education equipped with the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by employers
- a skills system aligned with employer needs
As part of the DfE’s Review of level 3 post 16 qualifications consultation outcomes, Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) has been asked to lead the future approval of technical qualifications.
As a result, this consultation seeks views on our approach to approving technical qualifications using the new powers we have been granted through the Skills and Post-16 Education Act 2022.
The consultation may be of particular interest to
- awarding bodies, or their representatives, especially those that offer (or intend to offer) technical qualifications that would need to be approved by IfATE in order to be eligible for public funding in the future
- schools, colleges, and training providers, especially those that deliver (or intend to deliver) technical qualifications that are or will be approved by IfATE
- professional, statutory and regulatory bodies
